Loo Chu Kiong

Professor Dr. Loo Chu Kiong completed his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree with honours at the University of Malaya in 1996. He received his PhD degree at the University of Science Malaysia in 2004, specialising in neurorobotics. He is currently a full Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, University of Malaya. His main research interests are neuroscience inspired machine intelligence.

He has led numerous research projects as Principal Investigators of several international funding projects including Intel, AOARD, Sumitomo foundation, UAEU-AUA Joint Research and International Inter-faculty Initiative in Computational Systems Care, Tokyo Metropolitan University. He also contributed to other groups such as smart wearable implantable medical devices under the CREST fund. From these research activities, he has He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers on neurorobotics and machine intelligence. Prof. Loo is also the recipient of JSPS fellowship award from Japan and Georg Forster Fellowship award from Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He has been the visiting professor of University of Perfectual Osaka University, Japan and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand. Apart from his academic responsibilities he has been a panelist in numerous platforms, including those the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE), Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM) and Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC). He is also a reviewer to several international technical journals which include IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems.

Prof. Loo is one of the founders of UM spin-off company, UMCH Sdn. Bhd. The UMCH company is an incubator company specializing in the innovative connected fitness, wellness and healthcare technology solutions, nurtured by the University of Malaya. The medical AI platform has been developed to collaborate with Primary Care Medicine Department and Social Preventive Medicine Department in University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) to provide industry accredited remote health monitoring services to the customers. The company has obtained many awards such as Special & Gold Award in the World Invention Innovation Contest 2015, The Star Business Outstanding Awards 2015 and the Rice Bowl Startup Awards, Best of life Sciences & Med Tech.
